Joanna (Jodi) Burg Torzewski, PhD

Clinical Psychologist

I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 25 years of experience. In my private practice in the Chicago Loop, I provide evidence-based psychotherapy for adults, career consultation, and training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

For 24 years I have served as adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. In this capacity, I have taught a variety of courses in the clinical psychology doctoral and internship programs. In 2021, I was honored by my students as ‘Teacher of the Year’ for my (online) ACT class.

I received my B.A. in Psychology at Washington University in St. Louis, and my M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Binghamton University (SUNY). I completed my internship at the San Francisco VA Medical Center, and received post-doctoral training at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Oakland California before moving to Chicago to work at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. In 2003, I made the transition to private practice, and have dedicated my career to providing the highest quality services possible to my patients.

While originally from Washington D.C., I have called Chicago home for over 25 years, and live in the Lincoln Park neighborhood with my husband, teenage son, and cat, Birdie.

Every day, I am grateful for the privilege of working with my patients, students, and colleagues; all of us committed to the pursuit of a life worth living.

María José Luna, MS

Advanced Doctoral Extern

I am a bilingual, bicultural Ecuadorian woman and a clinical psychology PhD Candidate at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine. I’ve received several years of training to provide evidence-based psychotherapy for adults, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).  My externships have been in outpatient and community mental health clinics in the Chicagoland area. In 2021, I was awarded the Walter F. Burke Award for Clinical Excellence by Northwestern University. I received my B.A. in Psychology from McGill University and my MS from Northwestern University.

I am delighted to complete an advanced externship with Dr. Jodi Burg Torzewski. My goal is to further develop my ability to provide Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for patients who hope to reduce suffering and live a meaningful, purposeful life.  As a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive clinician, I strive to create a welcoming, safe, and respectful therapeutic relationship with all my patients.

I currently live in the West Town neighborhood with my dog. Although I have lived in many cities in the United States since I moved here from Quito, Ecuador, Chicago has quickly become my home. I am grateful for the opportunity to provide mental health care for the diverse communities of Chicago.
